Bluefin Tuna Fishing
A major change that has taken place over recent years is the arrival of the bluefin tuna in English waters. 2024 marked the first year of the bluefin tuna catch and release fishery in England and Silver Spray II was successful in obtaining one of the licenses to fish legally for them. In November 2024 we landed our first 3 bluefin tuna to the boat, learning a lot in the process. We are now confident that we can target these fish using a range of tactics and connect our customers with the experience of a lifetime. Methods we use include live bait, dead bait, spreader bars and top water lures.
Here at Silver Spray Charters we have invested in top of the range equipment to help you get connected with the fish of your dreams. We have full sets of both 50lb class and 80lb class stand-up rods depending on what size fish we may be targeting. These are matched with suitable reels loaded with hollow-core braid and fluorocarbon top-shots. If you are lucky enough to get connected to a real monster of the deep, we have two sets of harnesses to take the pressure off, for those who need it. For those feeling a bit more adventurous, we also have a very heavy popping set up to target the fish using top water lures like poppers and stick baits. This is not for the faint hearted as you are connected directly to the fish with no spreader bar to slow it down and believe me they do take a lot of tiring out.
Trips to target tuna can involve doing lots of miles to find the area they are feeding in, so we recommend booking at least 2 days so that a stop-off in another port can be planned if needed. Single day trips are available as well but it increases steaming time and decreases tuna fishing time!
